Project progress

This part of the website is dedicated to the AlterIAS project progress.
Here you will find our action program and its progress.

Preparatory actions

Two preparatory actions (B1 et B2) are planned in the program. These actions are essential pre-requisite for the project starting.

Action B1: Socio-economic survey on invasive ornamental plants in Belgium.
The final report is available on this website (see online publication).

Action B2: Preparation of the Belgian Codes of conduct on invasive plants.
The Code was prepared through consultation with the horticultural sector between November 2010 and July 2011. Round tables were organized in Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels, with a total number of 70 participants gathering scientists involved in invasion biology, horticulture professionals and members of the AlteriIAS team. The consultation was organized in four steps:

Step 1: presentation of the invasive plants issue, the ISEIA protocol, the AlterIAS project and the philosophy of Codes of conduct. Open discussions on preventive measures to reduce the spread of invasive ornamental plants that could be include in a Code of conduct.

Step 2:
synthesis and approbation of measures proposed in step 1. Definition of the list of species to stop the use (ban from sales/stop plantations). Discussion species by species.

Step 3:
redaction of a draft of Code integrating all proposals made during the consultation. Submission and presentation of the dratf to main professional horticultural federations and associations for consultation.

Step 4: final meeting with all participants from the different regions in order to approve the code definitely.

Public surveys

Two public surveys are planned (E1 and E2) at the beginning and the end of the project in order to assess the efficiency of awareness campaigns conducted during the project. The initial survey is finalized. Results are partially presented in the socio-economic survey on invasive ornamental plants.
